When you feel your power drill is becoming hot, run it flat out under no load - it will cool down faster than it would simply being left to cool.
Most models have plenty of torque (turning force) for driving screws. A torque limiter lets the drive slip once the set torque is reached. It's useful for flush-driving countersunk screws. The final click position locks the drive for drilling.
Always buy a drill with a two-speed gearbox. In high gear (typically 0-1000rpm), the tool spins fast enough for quick drilling, and in low gear (typically 0-400rpm) you get controllable, grunty, screwdriving. You change gear using a slide: make sure it operates smoothly and without excessive force.
